This method uses something you likely already have at home: plain sewing thread. When matched to your door or window background color, the thread practically disappears. The result? A wreath that looks like it's magically floating exactly where you want it. It’s quick, inexpensive, and renter-friendly. And once you try it, you may never go back to over-the-door hangers again. This invisible wreath-hanging technique is recommended for indoor use, making it perfect for entryways, interior doors, and window decorating. It works beautifully for seasonal wreaths... from spring and summer to fall and holiday décor... as well as lightweight window decorations such as faux stained glass. Think of it as invisible decorating with a touch of functional magic. Estimated Time to CompleteLess than 3 minutes. Level of DifficultyVery easy. If you can tie a knot and measure a piece of thread, you can do this. Estimated CostWindow method: pennies Door method: approximately $5–$15 depending on the hook FREE if you already have these. Items NeededInstructionsHanging Wreaths on Doors (Invisible Method) 1. Choose where the wreath will hang Hold the wreath up and decide where you want it to “land” on the door. In my example, the wreath sits 19 inches from the top of the door. 2. Match the thread color This is the magic step. Hold your sewing thread up against the door until you find the closest color match. Most doors are white or off-white, but if your door is painted a custom color, just match as closely as possible. (Once hung, the thread becomes nearly invisible.) 3. Install the hook on the back of the door Place a Command hook upside down on the back of the door, about 6.5–9 inches from the top. Why upside down? Because the thread will loop over the top of the door and catch on the hook, holding everything securely in place. In my example, the hook is 6.5 inches from the top. (And I can remove the hook without damaging the door.) 4. Calculate the thread length To keep the wreath secure, the thread is doubled for strength. So add the following measurements:
5. Attach the thread to the wreath
The doubling helps ensure the thread won’t snap and keeps the wreath stable. 6. Hang the wreath Loop the thread:
Step back and admire your floating wreath with no visible hardware in sight. Check it out! Hanging Window Wreaths or Decor (Invisible Method) This same invisible method works beautifully for lightweight window decor. 1. Decide where the decor should sit Hold the decor up in the window and decide where it should hang. 2. Measure where the thread will secure Possible attachment points include:
3. Calculate the thread length
If the decor is lightweight, a single strand of thread is usually enough. 4. Attach the thread to the decor
5. Secure the thread on window
A Small Decorating SecretThe best decorating tricks are often the simplest ones. With a little thread and a few minutes, you can hang wreaths on doors and windows without nails, without damage, and without visible hooks.
It's the fine touches and littles details of functional style made simple providing a more elegant, polished look... with a little bit whimsy. And once you start using invisible thread tricks around your home, you’ll likely find yourself wondering: What else can I make float?
