Low-Maintenance Way to Create a Lush Outdoor Space

There’s always that spot. The deck corner where nothing seems to grow no matter what you try. The covered apartment balcony hidden with barely enough sunlight. Or the front step that gets blasted by intense afternoon heat until even the “full sun” plants give up.

You buy the flowers. Haul the dirt. Water faithfully. And somehow the planters still end up looking tired, crispy, or half-empty.
All you really wanted was that lush, outdoor space that feels like a plant haven. The good news? You do not need perfect growing conditions to create it.
One of the simplest ways to completely change an awkward outdoor space is by using faux outdoor plants and flowers with a little intention. And not the shiny plastic greenery people used decades ago. Today’s faux outdoor plants look surprisingly realistic while still giving you that soft greenery, texture, and color without constantly replacing struggling plants every season... or throughout the season.

Blending right in with nature… without the watering schedule

For many people, it actually cost less over time than repeatedly buying live plants, potting soil, fertilizer, watering supplies, and replacement flowers year after year.

Instead of starting from scratch every spring, you simply pull your faux plants back out when the weather warms up and instantly bring your deck, balcony, or front porch back to life.
No digging.
No hauling giant bags of soil.
No spending your entire Saturday watering and trimming.
No trying to rescue a plant that clearly checked out weeks ago.

Just easy greenery, cozy texture, and an outdoor space that finally feels finished and inviting. When blended naturally with real outdoor elements, faux plants look surprisingly convincing and help the space feel lush and lived in. Even the squirrels in my yard seemed fooled at first.

Whether you’re looking for front door planter ideas, deck privacy inspiration, balcony decor, or ways to soften a harsh outdoor space with a relaxed tropical vibe, faux plants give you flexibility that real plants sometimes just can’t.

Maybe you love a modern deck with clean lines and oversized planters. Maybe you prefer layered greenery beneath a shaded pergola where nothing wants to grow. Or maybe you simply want your front entry to feel warm, welcoming, and pulled together from spring through fall… without constantly replanting everything.

The best part is that faux outdoor landscaping lets you design for the feeling you want instead of constantly battling the growing conditions you have. And there’s something really nice about that.

Psst… Our neighbors still compliment how good the plants on our deck look year after year. Most of them still have no idea they’re faux.

Level of Difficulty

Very easy. No gardening skills required. No hauling bags of dirt. No wondering if the plants will survive the season.

Estimated Time to Complete

Using pre-potted faux plants: about 10 minutes to unbox and place.
Using pots you already own: about 20 to 30 minutes to clean the pots, optionally spray paint them for a fresh look, and place the plants inside.

Estimated Cost

Varies depending on the number and size of plants you use. However, I’ve found the cost comparable to just one season of buying flowers and plants… except these can be reused year after year at no additional cost in the years to come. And if you already have pots or planters on hand that you like, there’s another cost saving.

In my project, I reused existing pots and purchased faux plants for about $30 each. They stay on my shaded back deck year-round and still look beautiful more than five years later.

Items Needed

  • Planters or pots (Use existing ones or pick new styles if you’re going for a certain decor vibe like modern, rustic, tropical, or cozy urban garden)
  • Faux outdoor plants or faux outdoor flowers
  • Plastic drainage trays or saucers for inside the planter
(These help catch rainwater when using nursery pots or decorative planters with a drainage hole so water doesn’t pour across your deck, balcony, or front step... or sitting water doesn't damage wooden decks.)
  • Optional: an old plate or shallow dish for catching additional water if needed
Note: Some faux outdoor plants come pre-potted and already arranged, which makes this even easier. We’ll get to those options later.

My mommy usually sticks with simple faux greenery plants or plants with smaller flowers because they tend to visually mesh into the outdoor surroundings more naturally. But between us… we did get quite a few compliments on the (faux) tulips Mommy “planted” in the flower bed.

Instructions

If Using Your Own Pots:
  • Measure your pots so you know the height and width your faux plants should fit comfortably inside.
  • Wash and clean the pots. If desired, give them a quick coat of spray paint for a refreshed look. For my project, I utilized pots my late parents used for their deck.

Sometimes spray paint doesn’t adhere well to certain pot surfaces. It’s always smart to test a small area on the inside of the pot before committing to painting the exterior. And consider keeping the pot colors and designs simple, allowing the plant itself to become the main focal point.
  • Decide on the overall feeling you want the space to have. Maybe layered greenery for deck privacy ideas, soft flowering plants for front door decor, or a few potted plants to soften corners of a small balcony.
  • Browse for faux plants and flowers that fit your space and style. (I’ll provide to resources later.)

Once your plants arrive:
  • Unbox them
  • Fluff and shape the branches if needed
  • Place drainage tray at bottom of pot (to catch rain and protect wood decks, balconies, and front steps)

  • Place plants into your pots/ planters
  • Position them wherever you want a little more softness, greenery, or privacy
  • Step back and enjoy the instant transformation.

If Buying Pre-Arranged Faux Plants
  • Unbox them
  • Place them where desired
  • Admire your suddenly lush little outdoor haven
Maintenance
At least on my shaded but uncovered deck, maintenance has been very minimal. Depending on how exposed your plant setup is to weather elements, you may just need to occasionally empty collected rainwater from trays or pots to help prevent mosquitoes and other insects. Some people don’t even do that.

Solid Resources
As mentioned earlier, whether you’re using loose faux plants with your own pots or fully pre-potted faux trees and arrangements, the possibilities are really only limited by your imagination. Because styles, spaces, and budgets vary so much, I’m recommending general shopping resources rather than specific products for selection, quality, and price.
  • Amazon
  • QVC
  • HSN
  • Walmart
  • The Home Depot (especially for larger faux outdoor trees)

When searching, be sure to specify “faux outdoor plants” or “faux outdoor flowers.” You can even search for a specific plant or flower you’re trying to recreate outdoors. And definitely read the product details carefully to make sure the plants are weather resistant and intended for outdoor use based on the conditions where you’ll be placing them.

There you have it… a simple way to create a cozy, stylish outdoor space in under 30 minutes without the constant watering, feeding, or trimming that real plants sometimes demand. After all, outdoor spaces should feel relaxing… not like another weekend chore.

So now that we’ve put the fun back into functional, stylish living in well under an hour, go enjoy your little plant haven and outdoor escape.
