DIY Fall Window Decor: Make Leaves Look Like They’re Floating

This budget-friendly DIY creates a gorgeous, natural autumn view every time you look out your window.

​It is the perfect way to start decorating in late August or early September, regardless of whether you look out at palm trees or maples.

​Best of all, it completely eliminates clunky ribbons and distracting suction cups. It takes under 3 minutes and costs pennies.

​This floating-leaf illusion is my absolute favorite way to kick off the season early. I love putting this up in mid-August right when the first school buses start rolling by. It brings that magical, crisp October morning feeling right to your glass, even if it still feels like peak summer outside.

We’ve all seen window decorations ruined by ugly plastic suction cups or heavy, clunky ribbons that block your actual view. This hack fixes all of that. By using a virtually invisible anchoring method, your leaves look like they are truly suspended in mid-air for a completely clean, natural look.

Best of all? You do not need special tools nor need to be a crafting expert to pull this off.

Items Needed

• Polyester sewing thread 
• Optional: clear Scotch tape or clear packing tape
• Lightweight autumn decor to hang (see Ms. Buttons recommendations below)

To really play off the natural light coming through your window, look for inexpensive, lightweight items that are translucent or have a subtle shimmer. Colored cellophane cutouts, iridescent faux leaves, or lightweight acrylic leaf gems will glow beautifully when the sun hits them. 

Instructions

Create the look of decor gently floating in your window using thread that blends into the background.

Choose the Placement

• Hold your decor up to the window and decide exactly where you'd like it to hang.

Choose an Attachment Point

• Look for a discreet place to secure the thread, such as:
  • A window lock or latch
  • The top or side of the window frame (using a small piece of clear tape)

Choose the Thread That “Disappears”

• Hold a few thread options against the window background… especially the window screen, glass, or outdoor view.
• Step back a few feet and see which thread blends in best. Depending on your window, clear, white, gray, or another neutral thread may virtually disappear.

Measure the Thread

• Measure from the attachment point to where you want the decor to hang.
• Double that measurement
• Add about 6 extra inches for tying and adjustments.

If the decor is lightweight, a single strand of thread is usually enough.

Attach the Thread
Tie or loop the thread securely around the decor.

​Secure It to the Window
Loop the thread over a window lock or latch, or discreetly secure it to the window frame with a small piece of clear tape.

That's it! From just a few steps away, the thread virtually disappears, making your decor look like it's gently floating in the window… as shown below.
